Join our team of volunteers on the third Friday of the month to pack boxes of food at Calvary Presbyterian Church (northwest Detroit) for their food distribution in the community. Local residents receive shelf-stable food as well as milk, eggs, frozen meat, fresh fruit and vegetables distributed on the third Saturday of the month. Help is needed unloading the U-Haul of food from Gleaners, setting up tables, unloading food from the pantry onto tables, assembling boxes of food for distribution, and assembling bags of fresh produce for distribution. We have tasks for those who can lift heavy items and those who can’t. All help is welcome. Littlefield Action for Social Justice has been a People’s Pantry at Calvary partner since March 2021
Learning Opportunities
Artforms like film and literature can be a gateway to understand the lived experiences of others, particularly those who are marginalized.
Join us on the third Monday of the month to discuss movies related to social justice that we watch at our leisure beforehand. We meet on Zoom at 7pm (with a quarterly in-person hybrid option). Click here for previous movies discussed. The Engage! Movie Group has been meeting monthly since June 2020.
“The movies we have watched have been very educational. I’ve learned a lot about historical events I was not taught in school. But the best part is the group discussion where I gain insights into others’ impressions and experiences while also processing the content deeper by articulating my thoughts. I enjoy this group very much. It has been enriching. ” -L.M.
Join us every other month on the fourth Monday of the month to discuss social justice books. We alternate between fiction and non-fiction. We meet on Zoom at 7pm. Click here for previous books discussed. The Engage! Book group was started by Bob Stead at Littlefield Presbyterian Church and has been meeting bi-monthly since 2016.
“The variety of books that we have read have really opened my eyes to the lives of others in situations unlike my own middle class, white, Midwest, suburban experience. Our discussions always surprise me with perspectives I hadn’t considered and I often recommend our book choices to others.” – E.N.
Both groups read the selected book and watch the movie independently, then gather for informal discussion, reactions and takeaways. While the subject matter is often uncomfortable, we feel it is important to look toward and not away from injustice to build awareness, stamina and resilience towards effecting change. Come as you are, when you are able! No long-term commitment needed. For more information click here.
